Losi's Corner Amityville

 

One of the most colorful of Amityville’s mom & pop stores was Losi’s corner located at the northwest corner of Park Avenue and Ireland Place. Originally built as a harness and saddle shop in 1899, the two and a half story building was the first to have a paved sidewalks and was the first to install electric lights in the area.  Converted into a dry goods store by Anton Figari the store was purchased by Louis Losi his partner on the death of Anton in 1908 Losi’s store was a favorite of us children for penny candy and school supplies.    They always had lots of choice fruit baskets along the sidewalk. It was famous for Edith Fowley’s pies with celebrities  like Will Rodgers and Fred Stone coming in from Brooklyn to buy their pies at Losi;s. The store is still standing unchanged as of this 2020 writing .

Patchogue's Light and Heavy Rail systems

There was in the early twentieth century there was an ongoing Light Rail Trolley System that was intend to connect Patchogue, Sayville, Setauket to Port Jefferson. It was a Storage Battery System, but the population didn’t grow fast enough to support it and its last run was in 1919.           The LIRR reached Patchogue in 1862 going from steam to Diesel with the line only electrified to Babylon . Amityville Long Island old photos 1880 to 1920

Amityville Long Island Amityville is the western most village in the town of Babylon in the county of Suffolk. Accord to the Amityville Historical Society Amityville was first settled by Europeans from Huntington a settlement on the north shore of Long Island then call Nassau Island in 1657. Huntington was settled in 1653 so it didn’t take long for them to wonder south. They first they called the land South Huntington or West Neck South bought from the native tribe that they called the Massapequa Indians in 1697. I don’t know if anyone knows the price they paid them. There was only a small population of salt hay farmers and fishermen until the late 19 th early 20 th centuries when the wealthy people from the City of New York found the village attracted by the Amityville River.
