Northport Long Island Photos 19th & 20th Centuries

Cow Harbor was renamed Northport in 1837 

This is a painting by Edward Lange. He did over 100 paintings of the area between 1871and 1889. This is a view of the south side of Main Street, the building on the right row of buildings in the picture is at the location where Skippers is today.

Although the Trolley was electric, note that horse drawn wagons still appear to be common. The wood frame building on the right with the triangular window at the top was one of the four buildings destroyed in a fire in 1930. The site is now occupied by Byers Realtors. The fire destroyed the four buildings up to (but not including) the old 5&10 building, (GAP for the younger crowd).

This is a photo taken on upper Main Street in the 1920s. I had a negative strip on celluloid film, and made this print from one of the frame. The celluloid in the can started to get warm, so I took it outside and let it burn. The source was Ed Kiefer, who said it was the result of a political bet lost by the guy pushing the wheelbarrow. Downtown Main Street, Northport. August 1949 notice the diagonal parking. I never liked diagonal parking for the idea of backing to traffic scares me.


A steam locomotive roaring through Northport in the year 1950 soon to be replaced with the diesel locomotive and then the electric trains. They were way too dirty, but there was something about them.

Amityville Long Island old photos 1880 to 1920

Amityville Long Island Amityville is the western most village in the town of Babylon in the county of Suffolk. Accord to the Amityville Historical Society Amityville was first settled by Europeans from Huntington a settlement on the north shore of Long Island then call Nassau Island in 1657. Huntington was settled in 1653 so it didn’t take long for them to wonder south. They first they called the land South Huntington or West Neck South bought from the native tribe that they called the Massapequa Indians in 1697. I don’t know if anyone knows the price they paid them. There was only a small population of salt hay farmers and fishermen until the late 19 th early 20 th centuries when the wealthy people from the City of New York found the village attracted by the Amityville River. Old Photos of The Mills and Streets of Patchogue Long Island

Patchogue Long Island By Richard Boyle The first of the European invaders it seems arrived around 1663, like many other villages of Long Island fishing, Oysters and calming was the main occupations.  I had heard that the name Patchogue was the original Long Island native's word for land of many lakes, but I am not sure that is true. There did develop an industry around the lakes where Mills were built the most famous one being the Lace Mill.
